Aquasnaps exhibition

NEW AQUARIUM EXHIBITION AIMS TO INSPIRE ‘AQUA SNAPPERS’
A new exhibition featuring the work of photographer and aquarist Jake Graham is to go on display at Bristol Aquarium on Friday, June 12th.

Featuring creatures from aquariums all over the world captured at thoughtful, surprising and beautiful moments, ‘Aquasnaps’ aims to inspire everyone to pick up a camera and get snapping.

Jake, who has worked as an aquarist at the Harbouside attraction since October 2013 is hoping the exhibition will demonstrate you don’t need expensive camera equipment to capture amazing aquarium images.

“For many amateur photographers, taking photos in an aquarium is problematic. Low light, fast moving subjects and reflections all pose big problems. I hope to highlight you don’t need expensive equipment to get a great shot,” said Jake.

“My camera set up, which I used to take all the photos in this exhibition, cost under £300, which is a tiny fraction of the cost of the equipment a professional photographer would use,” he added.

The exhibition, which features 26 of Jake’s favourite aquatic photographs, includes images of a diving penguin, dancing sea nettle jellyfish, playful sea otters and a shoal of anchovies.

Many of the photos on display will also include a tip from Jake on how to get the most of your shot; whether it is taken on an iPhone, a compact camera or an old DSLR.

Jake was born in Bristol and has lived in Westbury Park for most of his life. He studied Marine and Freshwater Biology at the University of Aberystwyth, Wales and it was while studying there he developed an interest in photography.

Since leaving University, Jake has travelled the world extensively, taking his cameras wherever he goes. However he strongly believes you do not need to go to the remote corners of the world with expensive camera equipment to get a good shot.

Many of Jake’s favourite photos were taken in the UK with a basic compact camera.

  • ‘Aquasnaps’ is on at Bristol Aquarium from June 9th – September 30th. The aquarium is open 10am daily and the exhibition is free to visitors.
