Take a seat
The former Bristol IMAX cinema, located at Bristol Aquarium in the heart of the harbourside, welcomes a new website where people can find out more about upcoming events and venue hire details.
The aquarium has been working with Bristol’s passionate film loving community to restore its cinema over the past few years.
The 300 seater auditorium has been revamped with Dolby surround sound, brand new carpet, and a new lens for the Christie projector to accommodate the 19x15m screen, making it the second largest screen in the South West, just behind IMAX Plymouth.
During our recent Prehistoric Sealife season during the Easter holidays, we discovered that the screen is so big that you could fit the entire length of a Megalodon, a giant prehistoric shark which roamed the seas over 3.6 million years ago, inside it. Inspired by the magnificent creature, and its awesome size that echoes the size of the brilliant screen, we chose the cinema’s new name – Bristol Megascreen.
“Film fans will have noticed, and hopefully enjoyed, the screenings that have been returning to our gigantic former Bristol IMAX screen, over the past few years.
We’d really like to thank 20th Century Flicks. Without Dave’s dedication to providing a high-quality projection service for us, and his passion for creating incredible and affordable cinema, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Big thanks to Ti Singh of Bristol Bad Film Club and Forbidden Worlds Film Festival for his passion and hard work in helping to renovate this space, as well as his drive and vision in showing fantastic and interesting films.
A huge thank you also to Andrew Maclean and Faisal Rahman for their work on our sound system over the years. Their knowledge and expertise has been invaluable.
Finally we are so grateful to local film festivals and groups such as Bristol Bad Film Club, Forbidden World’s Film Festival, South West Silents and Film Noir UK and Screens of Matter who have been instrumental in bringing films back here. It is incredible to have this interest in our amazing space and we are so excited to be pushing things forward and opening up new opportunities for the future.” – Chloe O’Dell, events manager of the Aquarium
Going forward, the aquarium hopes to host more of our own screenings of cult classics and family favourites, as well as continuing to collaborate with the brilliant local film community.
Our cinema is also the perfect location for your business presentations and events. We are a brilliantly versatile venue for conferences, comedy shows, films, auctions and more. Anyone can book us!
If you would like to hire the cinema for a private event, you are a festival looking for a screening venue, or if you would simply like to put on a film yourself you can find out more here!
We have so many things we would love to do here so watch this space as we continue to renovate this wonderful cinema. Make sure you come and see us for yourself. The fun awaits!
